Chapped lips can be very irritating and unattractive. Sometimes, these can be painful too. There are many effective ways to treat dry flaky lips. Some of these are given here:

Coat with lip balm

Always use high-quality lip balm made with cocoa butter or beeswax. For excessively dry lips, apply heavy coating several times a day. Be careful about those balms which have phenol or camphor in their ingredients. These actually dry out lips, therefore avoid using them.

Remove dead layer

Keep your lips clean. Remove loose or dead skin using a wash cloth dipped in warm water. Rub gently over your lips. Alternately, use a toothbrush instead of cloth to exfoliate. Apply chap stick or balm before moving brush over your lips. Apply Vaseline after that. Repeat this exfoliation every week.

Night care

It is very important to apply lip oil or balm every night before going to bed. It will let all ingredients work well while you are asleep. In day time, you wash your face a lot and eat food; therefore, balms are rubbed off. Night is an ideal time to keep chap sticks or balms stay longer.

Increase water intake

When you don’t provide your body with sufficient water, you get dehydrated. That makes lips dry out easily. Therefore, drink plenty of fresh water daily.

Take more fruits and vegetables

Include fruits and vegetables in your regular diet. These help restore body’s pH to proper alkaline state. In acidic state, lips chapping is morelikely to occur. Citrus and juicy fruits are good for healthy skin as well. These provide required nourishment to body and enable it get necessary energy.

Which foods are necessary?

Take foods rich in calcium, magnesium and omega 3. These help in hydration of body tissues. Include these in your diet:

  • Milk products
  • Grains
  • Beans
  • Fresh water fish
  • Soy
  • Nuts

These are great choice to keep lips hydrated.

Supplements also work

Take daily multivitamins in required amount. Often lack of vitamins causes dry chapped lips. It can take 4 to 5 weeks to get desired results from vitamin supplements.

Don’t lick your lips

Many women keep licking their dry lips. It’s a poor practice. It can not only worsen the condition but also affect your facial appearance and expressions, especially when you are sitting in a social gathering or group of people.

Avoid hot water, exposure to extreme winds and sunlight, as these can also dry out your lips.
