Yoga And Its Types

Yoga is one of the best practices to stay healthy. It not only offers mental benefits, but also ensures good physical health. Spiritual development is another advantage of it.Over the years, many types of Yoga have been developed. A brief discussion about them is given here:

Bhakti Yoga

This type is based on devotion to God. The novice is taught to be attached and devote himself completely to his Creator. It dates back to fifth century BC and so far, nine forms have been devised:

  1. Sravana (hearing about God);
  2. Kirtana (singing of God’s glory);
  3. Smarana (remembering God’s name and presence);
  4. Padasevana (service of God):
  5. Archana (worship of God);
  6. Vandana (prostration);
  7. Dasya (cultivating the Bhava of a servant);
  8. Sakhya (cultivation of the friend-Bhava);
  9. Atmanivedana (surrendering the self).

Jnana Yoga

This yoga mainly focuses at knowledge and consists of seven different stages that are:

  1. Study
  2. Desire
  3. Self-realization
  4. Protection of the mind
  5. Considering the world like a dream
  6. Developing indifference to objects
  7. Bliss
  8. Non-attachment to the material world
  9. Knowledge of truth

Karma Yoga

Word or action and the result of that action is “karma”. The yogic deliberately strives to do that karma that are good and avoid the evil actions. It is actually, carrying out actions with Divine union as it is based on dedication of all good deeds to God and serving selflessly without any avarice for reward or riches.

Mantra Yoga

This is a common and rather easier than rest of the forms of yoga. The person recites an enchanting word or a phrase, repeatedly to attain higher level of concentration. It helps to focus the mind better and improves its functioning to a considerable extent.It is further divided in various forms. Two common types of this Yoga are:

  1. asato ma sat gamayo
  2. aum mani padme hum

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is based on activating the energy lying dormant in spinal base area. It is done by meditation, chanting and classic poses under the supervision of a yoga instructor. A unique fact about Kundalini is, so far, it is considered to be the most powerful of all yoga styles.

Which one is the best for you?

It is hard to say which type of yoga is the most suitable for you. It can be decided only after consulting an expert. You can follow the most popular of these.
